4 Things That Need to Happen for Jason Thompson’s Billy to be a Success on ‘Y&R’

Jason Thompson

 OBSERVATIONS

It’s out with the old and in with the new on January 13, when debuts as Billy Abbott on “.” Thompson replaces , who joined the soap in June 2014 replacing . But let’s face it, he’ll be judged by whether or not he measures up to ‘s portrayal of the popular character.

In order the Thompson’s version of Billy to be a success and “Y&R” fans to accept him, 4 things need to happen.

Forever “Villy”
The chemistry between (Victoria) and Billy Miller was off the charts and reproducing it is nearly impossible. Despite their best efforts, Tom and Jenkins never came close. Thompson, however, has a major edge. He’s already been part of a daytime supercouple with (ex-Robin) on “GH.” He knows the drill and the intricacies that go into creating one. Of course, he’ll also have to connect strongly with Heinle and that remains the intangible, if their Victoria and Billy is going to work.

Family Ties
As one of Genoa City’s core families, the Abbotts are a mix of high profile characters with intricate relationships. First and foremost, Thompson’s Billy will have to connect with ‘s Jack, the big brother he’s always looking up to and whose approval is paramount to him. He’ll also have to tap into Billy’s vulnerable side with ‘s Ashley, the one sibling who’s always been able to reach him, even in his darkest hours. Lastly, there’s that all important bond he’ll need to master with ‘s Jill as he navigates their push-pull dynamic. Their unconventional mother/son attachment is one of daytime’s most unique and intriguing.

Shaking Dr. Drake
A big part of Thompson’s success will be depend on whether or not daytime fans can accept him as someone other than GH neurosurgeon Patrick Drake. He played the part for a decade and, in many ways, became synonymous with him. Heck, just seeing Thompson out of a lab coat and into a suit on a daily basis is going to be odd. Fortunately, Thompson is a consummate actor. He earned five daytime Emmy nominations during his tenure in Port Charles — three as Outstanding Lead Actor and two as Outstanding Supporting Actor. So if anyone can master the switch – even one as radical as transforming from a serious super doc to a lovable screwup – it’s Thompson.

Vitriol and Victor
The only thing as important as the rapport Billy shares with the people who know and love him in Genoa City, is the animosity between him and ‘s Victor. Their vitriolic relationship is like none other in soaps. There’s an undercurrent in every scene between them – Victor forever hating Billy for the love spell he’s cast upon his daughter Victoria, and Billy forever loathing Victor for his condescending arrogance. It will be crucial that Thompson keep that undercurrent alive any time the two characters cross paths, because it is a pivotal part of who Billy is.

‘Y&R’s’ Valentine’s Day: Hot Hookups, a Proposal and a Stunning Pregnancy

” celebrates Valentine’s Day, this week, with hot hookups, a proposal and a stunning pregnancy.

The hookup portion of the holiday includes the usual suspects. Cane () and Lily () rendezvous in a room upstairs at the Genoa City Athletic Club. “I’ve got you all to myself,” says Cane, as he pulls Lily into a kiss and then leads her onto the bed.

Meanwhile, the long estranged Devon (Bryton James) and Hilary () finally straighten things out between the two of them and share a champagne toast. One thing leads to another and before long they’re kissing and undressing each other.

Billy () and Victoria () meet at the Top of the Tower for a romantic dinner. Billy, however, has more than a delectable meal on his mind. He ends up getting down on one knee and proposing to his on-again/off-again ex. “Will you marry me, again,” he asks tenderly.

The Newman Offices provide the backdrop and desktop for Adam () and Chelsea’s () Valentine’s Day fun, when Chelsea surprises her husband at work wearing red lace lingerie. “Not another word,” she coos to a dumbfounded Adam. Then, with a rose in her outstretched hand she tells Adam, “You may proceed.” And he does, carrying her onto to the desk.

Romance isn’t the biggest part of “Y&R’s” week. That scene happens in a hospital. Ashley () is the patient, sitting up in her bed, while Dr. Neville (Michael Knight) stands at the foot of it. “I’m pregnant,” announces Ashley. Color Dr. Neville as stunned as the audience will likely be.

As viewers know, Ashley has only been with one man in the last few months, Ben (). And he just married her daughter, Abby (). It looks like things are about to get very complicated for the newlyweds.

Gwendolyn Osborne-Smith and and Jason Thompson

Every wedding needs a planner, even if it is a couple’s fourth time saying, “I Do.” So the newly engaged Billy () and Victoria () hire one to coordinate their next trip down the aisle on “,” and she’s being played by “The Price Is Right” model Gwendolyn Osborne-Smith.

“Feb 29th on @YRInsider I’m Evelyn-the Wedding planner! Acting with these cuties! Will Victoria and Billy Marry?” Osborne-Smith shared on Twitter, along with pictures of the bride and groom.

Osborne-Smith didn’t have to travel far for her new job, since “Y&R” and “The Price Is Right” shoot just across the hall from each other at CBS Television City in Hollywood. Nor was she nervous about the gig, since she has acted before. Osborne-Smith was a series regular in “Ocean Ave.” from 2002 to 2003 and appeared in “Basketball Wife” in 2013. Plus, she currently stars in the reality series “Meet the Smiths” with her husband, retired NBA player Kenny Smith, and their family. The show airs Fridays on TBS.

Look for Osborne-Smith to appear on “Y&R’s” Monday, February 29  episode as the very British Evelyn. She’ll share scenes with Heinle and Thompson.
